Die schwarze Transgender-Aktivistin und Stonewall Riot-Veteranin Marsha P. Johnson wird im Jahre 1992 Tod im Hudson River aufgefunden. Jahre später, im Jahr 2016 versucht die amerikanische LGBTIQ+-Aktivistin Victoria Cruz den Fall von Marsha P. neu aufzurollen. Sie will wissen, was Marsha wirklich zugestoßen ist. Für ihre Untersuchung nutzt sie alte Interviews mit der Familie des Opfers, wie auch von Freund*innen und anderen Aktivist*innen, die zu der Zeit tätig waren. Ihre Untersuchungen bilden den Roten Faden des Films, der anhand verschiedener Interview-, Foto- und Videoaufnahmen auch Marshas Geschichte erzählt.
Johnson gründete zusammen mit Sylvia Rivera die Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries (STAR) und kämpfte in den Straßen von New York für LGBTIQ+-Rechte, vor allem für die abgehängten und (sub)proletarischen Teile der Community. Die queere Medienorgansiation Glaad lobte den Film als »eindrucksvolle Geschichtsstunde über eine der ikonischsten LGBTQ+-Figuren aller Zeiten.«

»Happy Birthday, Marsha!« ist ein fiktionaler Kurzspielfilm über die Transgender-Künstlerin und Aktivistin Marsha »Pay it No Mind« Johnson, der sich ihr Leben vor und während des Stonewall-Aufstandes versucht vorzustellen. Die fiktive Handlung ist inspiriert von den verschiedenen Gerüchten rund um den Stonewall-Aufstand vom Juni 1969, an denen auch Marsha beteiligt war. Der Film schildert die Belästigungen auf der Straße und die ständige Bedrängnis durch Sicherheitskräfte und Strafverfolgungsbehörden, denen sich Marsha stets ausgesetzt sah. Er zeigt, wie die alltäglichen Entscheidungen zweier bester Freundinnen, sich zu wehren, den Lauf der Geschichte unweigerlich veränderte.

Black transgender activist and Stonewall Riot veteran Marsha P. Johnson is found dead in the Hudson River in 1992. Years later, in 2016, the American LGBTIQ+ activist Victoria Cruz is trying to reopen Marsha P.’s case. She wants to know what really happened to Marsha. For her investigation, she uses old interviews with the victim’s family, as well as friends and other activists who were active at the time. Her investigation forms a recurring theme in the film, which also tells Marsha’s story through various interviews, photographs and video footage.
Johnson co-founded the Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries (STAR) together with Sylvia Rivera and fought for LGBTIQ+ rights in the streets of New York, especially for the left behind and (sub)proletarian sections of the community. The queer media organisation Glaad praised the film as a „powerful history lesson about one of the most iconic LGBTQ+ characters of all time.“

»Happy Birthday, Marsha!« is a short fictional feature film about transgender artist and activist Marsha „Pay it No Mind“ Johnson trying to imagine her life before and during the Stonewall uprising. The fictional plot is inspired by the various rumors surrounding the Stonewall riot of June 1969, in which Marsha was also involved. The film portrays the street harassment and constant harassment from security forces and law enforcement that Marsha has faced. It shows how two best friends‘ everyday decisions to fight back inevitably changed the course of history. Decades before the first Christopher Street Day was celebrated, there was no name for gays, lesbians and trans* peopl – and something that didn’t have a name couldn’t exist at all. With their multi-award-winning »Before Stonewall«, Greta Schiller and Andrea Weiss trace the history of how trans* people, gays and lesbians became visible in American society – a vivid document of a hidden history, full of wit and irony and sometimes also sadness. »Before Stonewall« uses documents, film excerpts and photos, but above all statements from »ordinary gay people« to put together anecdotes, stories and events in a way as if you hadn’t seen a film but experienced everything yourself. Authentic. »Before Stonewall« is not a dry, purely informative inventory, but a lively, emotionally charged retrospective – or, as the American press put it succinctly: »Roots for Gays!

Die internationalistische Queer Pride Demo positioniert sich klar links, internationalistisch und antikolonial. Sie steht in klarer Abgrenzung zur Kommerzialisierung vieler Pride Paraden und deren Einhegung in bestehende Machtstrukturen. Die Demonstration umfasst viele Gruppen und Personen, die vor anti-queerer Unterdrückung oder beispielsweise vor dem Wehrdienst aus ihren Geburtsländern geflohen sind sowie migrantischen Vereinen und Organisationen, die schon lange politisch in Berlin arbeiten. Die Pride ist auch Ausdruck einer sich verändernden Berliner Linken, die sich nicht mehr ausschließlich aus einer (autonomen) subkulturellen Linken speißt und heute wesentlich internationaler und queerer ist. Rund 10.000 Menschen nahmen 2022 an der Demo teil. Auch in diesem Jahr rufen wir dazu auf: Heraus zur internationlaistischen Queer Pride in Berlin!

The internationalist Queer Pride demo positions itself clearly on the left, internationalist and anti-colonial. It stands in clear contrast to the commercialization of many Pride parades and their containment in existing power structures. The demonstration includes many groups and people who have fled from anti-queer oppression or, for example, from military service in their native countries and migrant associations and organizations that have been working politically in Berlin for a long time. The Pride is also an expression of a changing Berlin left, which no longer consists exclusively of an (autonomous) subcultural left and is now much more international and queer. Around 10,000 people took part in the demo in 2022. We are calling for it again this year: Get out to the international Queer Pride in Berlin!
